The Power of Two - Michelle Buchanan on Numerology, Self-Knowledge and the Power of Perspective
Michelle Buchanan is one of New Zealand’s best-known numerologists, Hay House author and international representative of New Zealand’s mind-body-spirit community. Through her books, readings and teachings, she has taken her work well beyond our shores - and has remained a long-standing supporter of DrumRoll.
That relationship goes back almost to the beginning. When DrumRoll and the wider project were still taking shape, Michelle generously gifted us a reading. The information proved helpful and accurate, and we included those insights as we made plans for the future.
It must have worked - because 200 issues later, we are still here to tell the story.
Now seemed the perfect moment to return to Michelle, to explore the meaning of this milestone number and the role numerology can play in understanding the patterns within our lives.
The Energy of 2
In numerology, 200 reduces to 2.
“The number two is about relationships, collaboration and cooperation,” Michelle explains.
It is associated with strengthening our relationship with ourselves, other people and the world around us.
“It is a loving, peaceful, harmonious, intuitive and spiritual energy.”
Michelle explained that 2 energy is receptive rather than forceful, encouraging us to go within, develop intuition and pay attention to our inner relationship rather than constantly pushing for external results.
For DrumRoll, collaboration is a particularly fitting theme. The magazine has always existed through relationships between readers, practitioners, contributors, advertisers and the wider spiritual community.
There was also a lovely synchronicity in our conversation. Michelle’s Life Path is 11/2. Our interviewer is also an 11/2.
“Oh my God - we are both twos!” Michelle laughed.
In its balanced expression, she describes 2 as nurturing, humble and peace-loving. At its heart, she says, “It represents love, harmony, balance and healing.”
Recognising the Pattern
Numerology remains central to Michelle’s work, but she sees it as a starting point rather than an end in itself.
“Numerology is the doorway.”
Using a birth date and name, she looks at patterns, challenges, potential and what she describes as their soul’s blueprint. It can illuminate something a person has been experiencing repeatedly without understanding why.
The first step, she says, is self-awareness.
“What am I here to work on? What are the repeating challenges? How do they appear in my life? What triggers me?”
If we can recognise a recurring pattern, we can begin to examine the beliefs and behaviours surrounding it and consider a different response.
But knowing the pattern is not enough.
“You have to practise it consistently in everyday life.”
The work is in noticing when an old response appears, challenging the beliefs behind it and gradually establishing a different way of thinking or behaving.
Changing Perception
That process also involves examining how we perceive what is happening around us.
During uncertain times, it is easy to become overwhelmed by events beyond our control. Michelle believes our point of power lies in identifying what is actually causing the fear or stress.
“The key is self-observation” she says.
What are you most worried about? What sits beneath that worry? What does it trigger?
From there, perception can begin to shift.
Michelle is not suggesting people ignore genuine difficulties or force themselves into relentless positivity. Sometimes a more believable first step is allowing for another possibility.
If we cannot yet believe everything will be fine, perhaps we can simply consider it may not be as bad as we think, or that there may be a solution we cannot currently see.
“The perception we choose is our Point Of Power.”
We may not be able to control every circumstance, but we can become more conscious of the perspective from which we meet it.
Bringing the Spiritual and Practical Together
Michelle believes this is where spiritual understanding and practical life come together.
Faced with a problem, most of us immediately search for physical solutions. We work harder, cut costs, gather information or try another strategy. Spiritual connection can become something we turn to only when everything else has failed.
Michelle would reverse that order.
“You go to Source first.”
Whether someone calls that connection Source, God, Creator or Universe, she sees it as a co-creative relationship. Rather than asking for a problem to disappear, we can ask for clarity, courage, guidance and the ability to recognise the next step.
Practical action still follows, but from a more centred place.
For Michelle, this is not about expecting the Universe to do everything for us. Self-awareness, changing behaviour and taking action remain essential.
As she puts it, the prayer is not, “Take away everything challenging me, and give me a million dollars.”
It is: “I understand that I have work to do. Help me do that work.”
This combination of spiritual connection and personal responsibility has become part of the wider message behind Michelle’s numerology.
Numerology as the Doorway
Although Michelle is internationally known as a numerologist, her interests have expanded across other spiritual systems and teachings.
She specialises in Pythagorean Western numerology and has also studied Chaldean numerology, alongside Western, Vedic, Kabbalistic and evolutionary astrology, Human Design and other traditions.
What interests her is how often different systems point towards similar themes.
“The same story is simply told in different formats.”
It has led Michelle to reflect on whether ‘numerologist’ fully describes the work she now wants to offer.
“My business is The Message. Numerology happens to be the pathway I have used.”
The numbers may provide the doorway, but behind them are larger questions about self-knowledge, the beliefs we carry, the patterns we repeat and how consciously we participate in our own lives.
200 Issues Later
There is something wonderfully appropriate about reconnecting with Michelle for this months issue.
She was there at the beginning, looking at the numbers surrounding a fledgling project and offering guidance about where it might lead.
We could not see 200 issues from where we stood then. We could only take the information available, listen to our intuition, make practical decisions and keep moving forward - an approach not so different from the one Michelle describes today.
For us, that approach worked.Perhaps that is the most fitting reflection for this milestone.
