patterns beneath our choices

When we think about improving our health and wellbeing, we often focus on what we need to do.

Eat better. Move more. Sleep longer. Manage our stress.

These foundations are incredibly important, but our wellbeing is also influenced by the patterns beneath our choices.

Perhaps you’re naturally independent and find it difficult to ask for help. Maybe you’re highly sensitive to other people’s emotions, constantly caring for everyone else or measuring your worth by how productive you are.

This is where I believe spiritual practices can sit alongside evidence-informed health strategies, by giving us a different way to reflect on ourselves.

One reflective tool I’ve been exploring recently is numerology.

What Is a Life Path Number?

Your Life Path Number is calculated from your date of birth. In numerology, it is traditionally associated with particular strengths, challenges and themes you may experience throughout your life.

My Life Path Number is 9, which is traditionally associated with compassion, idealism and being of service to others.

I could immediately recognise how this connects with my desire to support people and create work that makes a meaningful difference.

However, the description also invited me to consider the other side of being caring and service driven, which is the potential to sacrifice too much of yourself or carry more responsibility than is yours.

That part felt slightly more confronting, but also useful.

When I give too much of myself, there is less time and energy available for my own needs. Rest can be pushed aside, boundaries can become blurred and caring for myself can quietly move further down the list.

What Might Your Number Help You Notice?

The traditional themes associated with each Life Path Number can provide different starting points for reflection.  These themes aren’t instructions or fixed truths. You may connect strongly with some parts of your description and not at all with others.

The value comes from becoming curious about what resonates.

For example, you might ask yourself:

· What naturally gives me energy?

· What tends to drain me?

· Do I find it difficult to rest, ask for support or say no?

· Am I giving more of myself than I have available?

· Do I need structure to feel grounded or more flexibility to feel free?

· Am I looking after my wellbeing, or only everyone else’s?

· Is my health being supported by my daily life, or squeezed in around it?

Turn the Insight Into One Small Change

Awareness becomes more valuable when it helps us make a conscious choice.

If independence is one of your strongest themes, your change might be asking for help instead of doing everything alone.

If you’re naturally caring and compassionate, it might be protecting time for your own needs before giving the rest of your energy away.

If you’re driven by achievement, it could be taking a proper break without using it to complete another task.

For me, reflecting on my Life Path 9 creates a simple reminder:

I can support other people without carrying everything for them.

You don’t need to change your whole life based on a numerology reading. Simply choose one observation that feels meaningful and consider one small way you could support your wellbeing differently.

Numerology isn’t a scientific health assessment and can’t tell you what your body medically needs. However, it can be an interesting spiritual tool for exploring your strengths, your patterns and the way you care for yourself.
