This month, as we turn our focus to Summer Deities – the radiant gods and goddesses who embody warmth, abundance, and creative light – we were honoured to speak with visionary surrealist Elizabeth Kyle, the artist whose luminous paintings grace the Hay House/Doreen Virtue publication, Goddess Guidance Oracle Cards,.
For many readers and spiritual seekers, this deck is instantly recognisable, a beloved companion on the path to intuition and divine connection. Its imagery carries the vibrancy of Universal energy and magic. The collaboration began in a serendipitous moment. When Doreen Virtue received one of Elizabeth’s greeting cards featuring White Wind – a maiden and unicorn bathed in celestial light – she felt an immediate connection.
Moved by the painting’s tenderness and mystical power, Doreen reached out, beginning a creative partnership.
Nine of Elizabeth’s visionary paintings were chosen for the deck and depicted the Goddesses Dana (High Priestess), Nemetona, Oonagh, Abundantia, Aeracura, Athena, Isolt, Pele, and Coventina.
While some works were chosen from Elizabeth’s existing paintings, Nemetona – Sacred Space, Abundantia – Prosperity, and Pele, the Hawaiian Goddess of Divine Passion were all created by Elizabeth, specifically for the Goddess deck.
The cards became the visual expression of the sacred feminine in its many forms – nurturing, fierce, wise, and radiant. Celtic Madonna was adapted to represent Dana, the Celtic goddess of abundance and fertility. With its serene golds and rich blues, it became the cover image of the Goddess Guidance Oracle Cards, and companion book.
“The paintings choose their own path,” Elizabeth says gently. “I don’t know their destiny while they’re being created, but I know they have one, and I know they will go to the right person.”
Her creative process is as mystical as her subject matter. Before beginning a new piece, Elizabeth asks to receive a vision. “At night I ask to see my next painting,” she explains, “and in the morning the vision appears. Then I paint what I have been shown.” The work unfolds layer by layer, often over several weeks, as if revealing a message meant for both artist and viewer.
Elizabeth usually paints the face first, and communication begins. “The painting tells me what to do – especially if there is a person in it. They are part of me and come from my soul / love.”
That sense of spiritual wonder defines Elizabeth’s art. Every brushstroke is an act of devotion, channelling something larger than herself. She began painting in oils while at College, but in those days the turpentine was harsh and proved detrimental for breathing, fingernails and nasal passages. Switching to acrylics brought new freedom, allowing her to paint her visions quickly.
White Wind, her signature piece, carries a particularly personal story. “The unicorn historically, has represented a Messenger of Love,” she reflects. “He cannot be captured by force or greed. Only a pure heart can draw him near.” The painting took seven months to complete and emerged at a time when Elizabeth faced deep personal challenges. “I asked the Universe if I could paint a girl riding a unicorn.
